Aboard were stray dogs Belka and Strelka, accompanied by dozens of mice, rats, flies, and plant seeds. Unlike the tragic, one-way journey of Laika three years earlier, this canine duo was equipped with active life-support systems, real-time television telemetry, and a functional thermal shield engineered for recovery.
